State 55 formerly ran along Tustin Avenue and Newport Blvd before being routed onto the freeway. The southern end of the freeway was slowly extended closer and closer to State 1 and was planned to link to it. These plans were dropped due to heavy local opposition. It now ends about 1 1/2 miles north of State 1.
