California Route 209 SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RELINQUISHED. It serves Federal lands, military reservations, naval facilities, coast guards bases, a national cemetary, a national park and carries a heavy volume of traffic the far exceeeds the City's responsibility. The highway is a historic route of national significance (La Playa Trail) and connects multiple national historic landmarks. It was a mistake for the City to accept responsibility for the highway. Caltrans needs to repossess aquire the right of way and restore the original route to full State maintenance. This will benefit tourism and assist motorists/visitors in navigating the historic and scenic route to the attractions on Federal land, as well as the Cabillo National Monument, a major destination and popular unit of the National Park Service at the end of Point Loma
