Hwy 46 is a very busy highway connecting the Central Valley to the Central Coast. Heavy amounts of farming traffic mixed with tourists can make this road a dangerous one at times. One of the more famous collisions was on September 30, 1955 when a car pulled out in front of James Dean’s car at the junction with Hwy 41 near Cholame.

Caltrans has been working to upgrade Hwy 46 to a four-lane expressway and has mostly completed the San Luis Obispo County section. Only the summit at Polonio Pass just east of Hwy 41 remains to be completed which will create a continuous section of four-lane from I-5 to US 101.

The road was also a part of US 466 in varying sections from 1935 to 1964.
