Finally reaching Palmdale, US 6 parallels the railroad from here to Mojave. This a major stop along US 6 as it is one of the last places with services for many miles around. This section of Sierra Highway was originally paved in 1921. Prior to the mid-1930’s, the highway crossed the railroad tracks at Ave Q, then went north along 6th St East. In 1958, US 6 was upgraded to a four-lane roadway from Palmdale to Lancaster. The freeway bypassed central Palmdale it in 1965, with the final section between Ave P-8 and Ave I in 1972.
