Pico Canyon Road / Lyons Avenue

This section of US 99 was opened with three lanes in 1930. It was under construction through this area as early as 1928. In April 1949, US 99 was widened to a four-lane expressway from Pico Canyon Road to Saugus Junction. In 1951, the expressway was extended south to Weldon Summit. I-5 construction in 1967 greatly modified the roadway through here. Only a few culverts and a small section of the former northbound lanes converted to a frontage road (Hawkbryn Ave) remain from that old highway.
