Cuyama Highway
Runs from State 1 at Guadalupe to State 99 near Mettler
This road serves as a major east-west corridor connecting the Santa Maria Valley to the Central Valley, partially following the Cuyama River. Most of it is still a two-lane road but the section through Cuyama River Canyon was upgraded from a narrow and curvy road to a high-speed two-lane expressway in the 1960’s and 1970’s. This realignment also was somewhat unique as it altered the course of the Cuyama River at many points, which was also the boundary between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. This alteration has led to some “D” mileage, which is along a meandering county line.
