Highway 73 used to run on Macarthur Blvd until the early 1990’s. MacArthur Blvd south of present State 73 has a rather wide R/W, wide enough for the freeway that was once planned to run that way. Now it is just an eight lane thouroughfare to Corona Del Mar. San Miguel Dr was originally constructed as a “new” MacArthur Blvd to replace the current one that was to be a freeway.

The San Joaquin Hills Toll Road opened in 1996 and extended 73 from MacArthur Blvd in Newport Beach to I-5 in Laguna Niguel. It serves as a bypass of the busy El Toro Y, the I-5 / I-405 interchange. It is a scenic route with some great views near the former Catalina View toll plaza.
