US 466 – Salinas River

Salinas River

Here at the Salinas River, old US 466 has seen many changes. It is also now impossible to traverse the original alignment in its entirety. The original route crossed the river and turned right onto Rocky Canyon Road from Atascadero. In 1959, US 466 was rerouted onto a new alignment to the north, bypassing this area entirely. State 41 was then rerouted onto the former US 466 route and the Rocky Canyon Road route was abandoned. State 41 still used this location to cross the Salinas River until 2000, when a new bridge was constructed across the river to the north. As the existing bridge was only a temporary span, it was removed and the roadway closed.
